What is cashback?
Cashback is a bonus where the operator returns part of the amount a player has lost over a certain period. For example, with 5% weekly cashback, a player with $1,000 of net losses over the week gets $50 back. Cashback can be paid as real money or as bonus money — and that difference is very important.
Cashback is often called the "fairest" bonus: it doesn't come with heavy requirements and it works regularly for loyal players. But it still only covers a small part of your losses.
The main difference from a welcome bonus is that cashback is given afterwards, not upfront. You play first, then when the period ends the operator calculates your result and, if it is negative, returns part of it. That is why cashback doesn't require you to change your playing style: you bet as usual, and the bonus acts as a "safety cushion". This is especially convenient for long-term, regular players. For a one-off player, cashback matters much less, because it only kicks in at the end of the period and only if there was a loss.
How cashback is calculated
At most operators the formula is simple:
Cashback = (bets in the period − winnings in the period) × cashback percentage
In other words, the calculation is based not on losing bets alone but on your net result. If the week ends in profit, no cashback is paid.

The percentages and amounts in the table are examples. The real percentage often depends on the player's VIP tier: the higher the tier, the higher the cashback rate.
Types of cashback
- Weekly cashback — the most common; calculated every Monday or on a set day.
- Loss-based cashback — paid only when net losses exceed a certain amount.
- Sports cashback — a partial refund on losing accumulators or bets on a specific tournament.
- VIP cashback — a rate that increases with your loyalty programme tier.
- Game-specific cashback — only for live casino or a particular provider's games.
Does cashback come with wagering?
This is the most important question. If cashback is paid as real money, you can withdraw it straight away. If it is paid as bonus money, it usually has to be played through with a low multiplier (for example x1–x5). Low-wagering cashback is still good, but you need to know the terms. What to check in the cashback terms
Cashback may seem simple, but the rules vary considerably from operator to operator. Before activating a promotion, find the answers to these questions:
- What is the calculation period? Monday to Sunday, or seven days from your registration date — this determines which bets count.
- Which games count? Sometimes cashback only covers slots, or only sports bets.
- Is there a minimum and maximum cashback? Very small amounts may not qualify, and large amounts may be capped.
- In what form is cashback paid? Real money, bonus money or free spins — each has its own rules.
- How long do you have to claim it? Manually claimed cashback may expire after a certain period.
Also find out whether cashback works alongside another active bonus. At many operators cashback isn't calculated while a welcome bonus is being wagered, because the bets are made from the bonus balance. That is why, when choosing a welcome bonus, it is worth considering its effect on cashback too.
